How It Works

  1. Measure Your Walls

    Measure the width and height of each wall you plan to cover. For rooms, you can enter the total perimeter length and ceiling height instead of measuring each wall separately. Record measurements in feet and inches to the nearest half inch.

  2. Subtract Openings

    Enter the number and approximate size of windows and doors on the walls being papered. Default opening sizes are generic prompts; measure actual openings and confirm deduction practice with the installer.

  3. Enter Roll and Pattern Details

    Pick a roll preset (US 27" x 27 ft, Euro 20.5" x 33 ft, peel-and-stick 20.5" x 18 ft) or enter custom width and length from the product label. Choose the pattern match type (random, straight, or drop) and the repeat length printed on the label. Select whether you are using paste or peel-and-stick.

  4. Review Roll Count

    The calculator shows screened rolls needed, usable strips per roll after pattern waste, total strips required, and a +1 extra-roll planning prompt. Cutting details show strip width, cut length, and corner waste so assumptions stay visible.

Assumptions

  • Wall surfaces are assumed flat and plumb. Out-of-plumb walls may require additional trimming waste.
  • Pattern repeat waste assumes a conservative full repeat added to the cut length of every strip for straight and drop matches.
  • Window and door openings use generic prompt sizes unless actual dimensions are entered.
  • Roll dimensions use common US/Euro/peel-and-stick conventions or your custom entry; verify the product label since manufacturer sizes vary.

Limitations

  • Inside corners use a flat 2.5" per-corner waste allowance; outside corners, strip splitting, and overlap-and-double-cut seams are not modeled.
  • Does not model stairwell walls with angled cuts or cathedral ceiling transitions.
  • Paste and liner prompts use typical coverage figures and must be checked against product labels and wall condition.
  • Does not account for wallpaper borders, chair rails, wainscoting, product-specific trimming, or supplier packaging rules.

Frequently Asked Questions

Pattern repeat is the vertical distance between one point in the design and the next identical point. When hanging wallpaper, each strip must align with the adjacent strip so the pattern matches at the seams. This means you may need to shift each strip up or down, wasting material at the top and bottom. A 24-inch repeat can waste up to 23 inches per strip in the worst case. Straight-match patterns repeat at the same height on every strip, while drop-match (half-drop) patterns offset by half the repeat on alternating strips. Both types generate waste, but drop-match patterns are slightly less predictable.
Dye lot or batch matching is normally important, but the supplier and product label control the exact policy. Use the app output as a checklist to confirm lot number, attic stock, return policy, and whether future repair material should be bought with the original order.
Peel-and-stick wallpaper uses the same strip-count logic, but roll dimensions, surface requirements, and warranty conditions vary by manufacturer. Verify the exact width, length, pattern repeat, adhesion limits, bathroom/moisture rating, and return policy on the selected product.
The app adds one extra roll as a local planning prompt. The real attic-stock and waste allowance should come from the product label, dye-lot availability, installer layout, room complexity, supplier return policy, and future repair needs.
For an accent wall, measure only the single wall you plan to cover: width, height, and any openings on that wall. You do not need the room perimeter. For a full room, measure the total perimeter (sum of all wall widths) and ceiling height, then subtract all window and door openings. Some installers prefer to measure each wall individually and add them up, which gives a more accurate result for rooms with bump-outs, alcoves, or varying wall heights. The calculator supports both approaches.
