How It Works

  1. Enter Room Dimensions

    Input the room length, width, and ceiling height. The calculator determines each wall's area and the ceiling area separately.

  2. Subtract Openings

    Enter door and window counts. Standard deductions apply (21 sq ft per door, 15 sq ft per window), or enter custom sizes for large openings like sliding glass doors.

  3. Select Sheet Size

    Choose 4x8, 4x10, or 4x12 sheets. The calculator counts how many sheets each wall and the ceiling require, rounding up per surface.

  4. Choose Drywall Thickness

    Pick 1/2", 5/8", or 1/4" board for material context. Fire, sound, ceiling, and moisture requirements still need current product data, local code, and AHJ review.

  5. Review the Full Material List

    See total sheets, rolls of tape, gallons and buckets of joint compound, screws, and corner bead. Compound is estimated from local joint linear footage and screw-dimple heuristics.

Frequently Asked Questions

With 8-foot ceilings and one door, a 12x12 room requires about 14 sheets of 4x8 drywall for the walls and 4-5 sheets for the ceiling. The exact count depends on how you orient the sheets (horizontal vs vertical on walls) and how many windows are present. Horizontal hanging reduces visible joints.
