Composite manufacturers specify exact gap sizes in their install guides. Follow them or void the warranty.

Assumptions

  • Board width uses the actual face dimension (e.g., 5.5 inches for a nominal 5/4x6) plus the gap spacing.
  • Waste factor is 10% for parallel/perpendicular and 15% for 45-degree diagonal board orientation.
  • Fastener count assumes 2 face screws per board at each joist crossing for face-screwed installations.
  • Joist spacing is consistent across the entire deck area with no doubled or tripled joists at openings.

Limitations

  • Does not design the substructure (joist size, beam spans, post sizes, footing dimensions).
  • Picture-frame borders, inlay patterns, and herringbone layouts require manual material adjustment.
  • Stair treads, railing components, and fascia boards are not included in the material list.
