Siding Material Estimator

Calculate siding quantity plus J-channel, corners, starter strip, and housewrap for the complete exterior

Free siding material planning screen for siding contractors, builders, and homeowners who need a preliminary exterior cladding takeoff. Enter wall area, window and door counts, corner counts, and gable dimensions. The calculator returns local prompts for siding squares or pieces, J-channel length, inside and outside corner posts, starter strip, undersill trim, WRB rolls, and fastener weight. Supports vinyl, fiber cement, wood clapboard, board and batten, engineered wood, and metal panel prompts while keeping manufacturer instructions, supplier conversion, code/AHJ review, lead, silica, fall protection, and final order quantities explicit.

Pro Tip: Use the gable row as a planning prompt, not a guaranteed waste factor. Gable ends usually need extra waste because each course gets shorter with angled cuts, but actual reuse depends on profile direction, starter layout, trim, product length, crew sequencing, and supplier package sizes. Break out gable square footage separately and have the supplier or installer review the final product order.

How It Works

  1. Enter Wall Dimensions

Input wall width and height rows, then enter window and door counts with average opening sizes for preliminary deductions. Add gable areas separately with base width and peak height so the triangular area stays visible for review.

  2. Select Siding Material

Choose vinyl, fiber cement, wood clapboard, board and batten, engineered wood, or metal panel. Each row uses a local square or piece-coverage prompt that must be checked against the selected product SKU, package count, and current installation instructions.

  3. Enter Accessory Details

Enter inside and outside corner counts, corner heights, WRB roll prompt, waste prompt, rain-screen option, and cost prompt. The tool estimates J-channel, starter, utility trim, corner posts, WRB, furring, and fastener weight as source-boundary prompts.

  4. Review Source Gaps

Review the local quantity prompts alongside the product, supplier, code/AHJ, WRB/flashing, lead-paint, silica, fall-protection, and installer-review warnings before converting the screen into a final order.

Built For

  • Siding contractors preparing preliminary material takeoffs before supplier and manufacturer review
  • Builders estimating exterior cladding costs during the bidding phase of new construction
  • Homeowners comparing material costs between vinyl, fiber cement, and engineered wood siding options
  • Insurance adjusters screening contractor material quantities before field and policy review
  • Lumberyards helping walk-in customers discuss preliminary siding quantity prompts before final order conversion

Assumptions

  • Wall area is width times height and gable area is base times peak height divided by 2.
  • Window and door deductions use user-entered average square-foot prompts.
  • Housewrap uses a local 10% overlap/waste prompt against gross wall and gable area.
  • Fastener, trim, corner, rain-screen, and piece-coverage rows are local prompts that require current product and supplier review.

Limitations

  • Does not generate course-by-course layouts, elevations, shop drawings, or final supplier order quantities.
  • Does not approve WRB, flashing, rain-screen, drainage, window/door integration, or weatherproofing details.
  • Does not verify product SKU, warranty terms, code compliance, wind-zone fastening, or AHJ acceptance.
  • Does not determine lead-paint, silica, fall-protection, scaffold, disposal, or safe-work compliance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Vinyl and fiber cement use different product systems, accessory profiles, fasteners, cutting methods, movement gaps, safety controls, and warranty instructions. This screen only changes the local square or piece-coverage prompt; current product documents and a qualified installer still control the real order and installation.
The app uses a local prompt of 14 linear feet per window, 20 linear feet per door, plus a soffit/perimeter prompt. A final takeoff should measure each opening and transition, then convert to actual stick lengths, miters, laps, and product-specific trim parts.
Gable waste is project-specific. The app keeps a user-entered overall waste prompt and separately shows gable area so the supplier or installer can review angle cuts, layout, product length, and reuse assumptions before ordering.
Maybe. Rain-screen or drainage-gap requirements depend on product instructions, climate, local code, WRB/flashing design, wall assembly, and AHJ interpretation. The calculator only adds a local furring prompt so the issue is visible during planning.
The app applies a 10 percent overlap/waste prompt to gross wall and gable area and divides by the selected roll size. Current WRB, flashing, window, penetration, climate, and code details control actual coverage and installation.
Disclaimer: This calculator provides preliminary source-aware material prompts only. Actual quantities depend on field measurements, product instructions, WRB/flashing details, supplier package counts, code/AHJ review, lead and silica safety, fall protection, and qualified installer review. Do not use it as a final order, warranty, permit, inspection, or safe-work decision.
