Shift Schedule Generator: DuPont, Pitman & 4-on-4-off Calendar Maker

Build a rotating shift calendar from standard patterns (DuPont, Pitman 2-2-3, Panama, 4-on-4-off, Continental, 4x10, 9/80, 2-3-2), estimate the pay that falls out of it with configurable overtime rules, and export printable PDFs and ICS calendar files.

A rotating-shift calendar builder for the patterns that run most 24/7 operations. Pick one of eight templates (DuPont, Pitman 2-2-3, Panama, 4-on-4-off, Continental 8-hour day/evening/night, 4x10, 9/80, or 2-3-2), set the start date and your crew, and the tool generates the full calendar: which dates you work, day or night, and how the stretches and breaks fall across weeks and months. On top of the calendar sits a pay estimator: enter an hourly rate and the schedule hours flow through configurable overtime rules (including a custom-rule editor for thresholds that differ from the federal 40-hour default) into per-period gross pay estimates and period-by-period summary tables, so the financial difference between two rotations is a number instead of a guess. Crew colors are customizable, the calendar exports as a printable PDF (with a richer pro layout available), and an ICS export drops the schedule into Google Calendar, Outlook, or a phone as all-day events. Boundaries are stated in the app: templates are published planning patterns, the pay output is an estimate from your entered rate and rules rather than payroll, and overtime, rest, union, and policy compliance need HR and payroll review before a schedule is posted.

Pro Tip: When comparing two patterns, compare pay periods, not single weeks. Rotations like DuPont average 42 hours per week but deliver them lumpy: 36 one week, 48 the next, which under a weekly 40-hour overtime rule means the overtime premium lands in specific weeks. Generate both candidate schedules with your actual rate and overtime rule and read the period summary tables side by side; the annual difference between two patterns that look similar on a calendar can be substantial.

Shift Schedule Generator

How It Works

  1. Pick the Pattern

Choose from the eight built-in rotation templates: DuPont, Pitman (2-2-3), Panama, 4-on-4-off, Continental (8-hour D/E/N), 4x10, 9/80, or 2-3-2. Each is the standard published sequence of on/off days and shift types.

  2. Set Start Date and Crew

Pick the anchor date and which crew position you are generating for. The calendar fills in every scheduled date from the pattern, and crew colors can be customized from the presets.

  3. Read the Calendar

The month-view calendar shows worked days, shift type (day/evening/night), stretch lengths, and breaks. Page through months to see how the rotation hits holidays and weekends across the year.

  4. Estimate the Pay

Enter your hourly rate and choose the overtime rule; the default weekly threshold is editable, and the custom rule editor handles non-standard arrangements. The pay panel and period summary table show estimated hours and gross pay per period across the schedule.

  5. Export PDF and ICS

PDF export prints the calendar (a pro layout adds the richer report); ICS export downloads the schedule as all-day calendar events for Google Calendar, Outlook, or a phone. Verify imported dates before distributing, and treat exports as planning copies subject to revision.

Built For

  • A shift worker offered a move from 8-hour Continental to 12-hour DuPont, generating both calendars with their rate to see the real pay and lifestyle difference
  • A supervisor producing a printable 12-month rotation calendar for a new hire on crew C
  • Estimating which weeks of a Pitman rotation trigger weekly overtime before picking a pay-period structure
  • Loading the rotation into a family Google Calendar via ICS so shift dates stop being a surprise
  • An operations manager mocking up a 9/80 proposal and the resulting pay periods before taking it to HR

Features & Capabilities

Eight Published Rotation Templates

DuPont, Pitman (2-2-3), Panama, 4-on-4-off, Continental 8-hour, 4x10 with selectable days, 9/80, and 2-3-2, encoded as the standard sequences rather than approximations.

Full Calendar Generation

The pattern is expanded onto a real calendar from your start date: every worked date, shift type, stretch, and break, pageable across months and years.

Pay Estimator with Configurable Overtime

Hours flow from the generated schedule through an overtime rule you control, including a custom-rule modal for thresholds beyond the federal weekly-40 default, into estimated gross pay per period.

Period Summary Tables

Period-by-period tables of scheduled hours, regular and overtime split, and estimated gross pay, which is where two rotations that look alike reveal their financial difference.

ICS Calendar Export

Standard ICS download with the schedule as all-day events for Google Calendar, Outlook, Apple Calendar, and phones.

Free and Pro PDF Layouts

A printable calendar PDF in the free tier and a richer pro report layout, both carrying the pattern, dates, and crew identification.

Stated Boundaries

The app is explicit that pay figures are estimates from your entered rate and rules, not payroll; that exports are planning copies; and that overtime law, rest rules, union terms, and policy need HR and payroll review.

Frequently Asked Questions

There is no universally best one, which is why this tool generates several. DuPont buys a 7-day break at the cost of a brutal 7-of-8 stretch; Pitman/Panama 2-2-3 gives every other weekend off with no stretch over 3; 4-on-4-off is the simplest to staff and remember; Continental keeps 8-hour shifts at the cost of faster rotation. Generate your top two candidates with real dates and your real rate, and compare the calendars and pay tables rather than the pattern names.
DuPont crews average 42 hours per week across the 4-week cycle, but unevenly: some weeks run 36 hours and others 48. Under a standard weekly 40-hour overtime rule the 48-hour weeks carry 8 overtime hours each, so a meaningful slice of annual pay arrives as overtime premium in specific weeks. The pay estimator shows exactly which periods those are for your start date and rate.
A two-week pattern of eight 9-hour days, one 8-hour day, and an extra day off, so 80 hours land in 9 working days and you get every other Friday (or another chosen day) off. Payroll treatment hinges on where the workweek split is defined, which is exactly the kind of rule the custom overtime editor lets you mirror; confirm the official definition with HR before relying on the estimate.
It is an estimate built from the generated schedule hours, the rate you enter, and the overtime rule you select. It does not know your differentials, premiums, holidays, taxes, deductions, or your employer payroll system rounding, and state or CBA overtime rules may differ from the rule you configure. Use it to compare rotations and ballpark gross pay; use your payroll department for the real number.
Yes. Export the ICS file and import it into Google Calendar, Outlook, or Apple Calendar; the shifts arrive as all-day events. Spot-check a few dates after import, and when the rotation changes, delete the old events and import a fresh export instead of editing by hand.
Not necessarily; it depends on how the hours fall against the overtime rule. A 2-2-3 pattern alternates 36 and 48 scheduled hours per week, so under federal weekly-40 rules, overtime appears every other week. Some employers use alternative arrangements where the math differs. Generate the schedule and read the period table: the split is computed date by date instead of assumed.
This tool builds the deliverables for one crew: the calendar, the pay estimate, the printable PDF, the phone calendar file. The visualizer puts all crews on one timeline to inspect coverage and handoffs. Design here, verify coverage there.
Disclaimer: This is a schedule and pay planning estimator built on published rotation templates and the rate and overtime rule you enter. Pay figures are gross estimates only: they do not include differentials, premiums, holiday pay, taxes, deductions, or employer payroll-system specifics, and the configured overtime rule may not match the federal, state, or collective-bargaining rules that actually apply. PDFs, CSVs, and ICS files are planning copies; verify dates, calendar import behavior, pay treatment, rest and fatigue requirements, and policy compliance with HR, payroll, and safety before publishing or relying on a schedule.
