Free Plumbing DWV Sizing Calculator

Size drain, waste, and vent piping to IPC and UPC standards with fixture unit tallies and trap verification

Source-aware DWV review screen for organizing preliminary plumbing checks. Enter fixture counts to tally local drainage fixture unit (DFU) prompt rows, then screen horizontal branch, building drain, stack, vent, material, wet-vent, and cleanout review prompts. The output is not a licensed IPC/UPC table, permit drawing, trap-arm approval, cleanout schedule, product certification, or installation instruction.

Pro Tip: Treat every drain, stack, vent, cleanout, and material row as a prompt for adopted-code review. Local amendments, fixture listings, special waste, actual layout, vent method, pipe product data, and inspection requirements can change the final answer.

How It Works

  1. Select Code Basis Prompt

Choose IPC or UPC prompt rows for preliminary screening, then verify the current adopted edition, amendments, occupancy, fixture listings, and AHJ interpretation before design use.

  2. Add Fixtures

Select fixture types and quantities to tally the app-local DFU prompt rows. The app does not reproduce a complete licensed code table or approve unlisted fixtures.

  3. Configure Review Inputs

Enter the building-drain slope prompt, branch intervals, vent developed length, material prompt, and vent type. Actual developed length, fittings, offsets, trap arms, cleanouts, and vent connections remain layout checks.

  4. Review Vent Prompts

Use individual, common, wet, and circuit vent outputs as review prompts only. Method eligibility, fixture grouping, dry vent connection, AAV use, roof terminals, and engineered vents require adopted-code review.

  5. Check Source Warnings

Review the visible source warnings for IPC/UPC table gaps, material/product standards, cleanout access, special waste, permit, inspection, and qualified plumbing review.

  6. Export a Review Worksheet

Export a source-aware PDF worksheet for internal review. It is not a permit submittal, stamped design, installation instruction, or inspection result.

Built For

  • Plumbers organizing preliminary DWV fixture-unit and layout review before adopted-code lookup
  • Mechanical designers screening branch, stack, drain, and vent prompts before formal plumbing design
  • Plumbing inspectors and plan reviewers spotting source gaps that need the adopted code and project drawings
  • General contractors estimating rough material categories without treating the output as a product schedule
  • Apprentice plumbers learning why DFU prompts, vent methods, trap arms, and cleanouts require current code review

Assumptions

  • Fixture rows are app-local prompts and not a complete licensed IPC or UPC table reproduction.
  • Horizontal drain prompts use selected slope and cached local DFU rows only.
  • Material labels do not verify product standard, listing, joining method, support, fire rating, or manufacturer instructions.
  • Vent method eligibility, trap arms, roof terminals, AAVs, and cleanouts must be verified separately.

Limitations

  • Does not reproduce protected IPC or UPC tables or determine adopted-code compliance.
  • Does not model actual pipe route, fittings, developed lengths, stack offsets, trap-arm lengths, or vent connection points.
  • Does not size grease, acid, lab, medical, storm, indirect, or special waste systems.

Frequently Asked Questions

The IPC and UPC can assign different DFU values, drainage limits, and venting rules. This app keeps local prompt rows for screening only. Use the adopted edition and local amendments for final fixture counts and pipe sizing.
The building drain is a code and layout decision based on DFU load, slope, pipe material, fittings, offsets, special waste, and local requirements. The app shows a cached prompt row so you know what to verify in the adopted code.
Wet venting is a layout-specific code method. Fixture group, horizontal wet-vent section, dry vent connection, occupancy, code edition, and UPC/IPC differences all matter. This app does not approve wet vent use.
Trap-arm distance depends on adopted code, trap diameter, slope, vent opening, fittings, and fixture arrangement. This app does not calculate or approve trap-arm developed length.
Cleanout locations depend on adopted code, pipe size, horizontal run length, direction changes, access, sewer authority, maintenance method, and inspector interpretation. The app provides review prompts, not a required cleanout schedule.
Use it only as a preliminary worksheet. Commercial projects often include special waste, interceptors, accessibility, fixture counts, occupancy classifications, engineered venting, and permit requirements that require formal plumbing design.
The app includes PVC, ABS, cast iron, and copper DWV material prompts. Product standard, listing, fire rating, joining method, support, burial, chemical compatibility, and manufacturer instructions must be verified separately.
Disclaimer: This screen provides preliminary DWV source-aware prompts only. It is not a licensed IPC/UPC table, permit proof, code-compliance decision, trap-arm approval, cleanout schedule, product certification, installation instruction, inspection result, or substitute for adopted-code and qualified plumbing review.
